Follow orders or die.

Anika Washington knows the rules laid down by the counterterrorist agency that owns her. When she aborts a mission in order to spare a young girl, she’s given an ultimatum: take on a new mission that requires betraying her fellow operative, and lover, or forfeit her own life.

After discovering that her lover, Gianni, has chosen another, Anika accepts the mission. In the aftermath, she learns that Gianni was faithful to her and she’d been tricked into thinking otherwise. The knowledge comes too late and she’s almost killed in an agency double-cross.

Now she must run—battling time, former enemies and the agency itself to stay alive and save the man she loves.

My thoughts...
This book reminded me a lot of the TV show Nikita. You have this group of operatives who are either ex-cons or were in the child service system. Either way these people will not be missed and have nothing in life to really lose. There is an agency who sends these people on secret missions. One operative wants out and will do what she can in order to obtain her freedom.

Anika decides she's had enough with UNIT and wants out. The only thing is, no one gets out. They have something called a solo mission for those who want out and a solo mission is pretty much a death mission that has low odds of survival. Anika strikes a deal with the Commander of UNIT. If she can convince Gianni to help her with her Solo, thus proving his disloyalty to UNIT, they will grant her freedom. Only, nothing is ever as it seems and pretty soon Anika is second guessing everyone and everything.

I enjoyed the suspense in this story and found it to be entertaining as a whole. However, there were parts that I got a little bored during. There is a lot of down time and planning on Anika's part where she is waiting to make contact with Gianni to warn him of what's going on. She goes to museums and out to dinner and I found myself skimming those parts looking to get back to the action. I wish there had been a bit more action or maybe a little bit more of Gianni in the story. I didn't really find myself rooting for him like I should have.

Favorite quote...
"You are not your profile. You can choose what you want. What's inside here. You hopes, your dreams. I don't want Jewel. On anyone else. Just you." -Gianni

  1. Sounds like a great action story, even if it did slow down a few too many times!
