Kendall Morgan is a human bloodhound. Spending her childhood hunting relics with her ambitious archeologist father, she knew the two of them shared a sixth sense for the history and location of objects—sometimes even people. What she didn’t know was that their paranormal gift could ultimately be their undoing.
After the tragic plane crash that killed her father as well as her childhood best friend, Kendall dedicated her life to finding and protecting relics. When mysterious, sexy billionaire Nathan Larraby hires her for his latest expedition—the search for four powerful relics —she’s thrown into a world of high-octane danger. He sends brooding mercenary Jake Stone to watch Kendall’s back, but he may have created danger of a different kind.
As the team chases down clues, a man called the Reaper makes a play for the artifacts and will stop at nothing to put them to his own sinister use. What’s worse is that Nathan hasn’t told the whole story, and the dark secrets he’s keeping could cost them the mission…and their lives.
My thoughts...
I've read Anita's highlander books and really enjoyed them. So when I received this book in the mail, I was really excited to read it. Kendall has a sixth sense and is used by her employer to find priceless relics. She travels worldwide to dig up these artifacts but no mission has ever been like this one. She is sent out with a bodyguard, Jake, and almost immediately they realize that Jake's skills are going to be needed if they are to survive.
It definitely has an Indiana Jones type feel to it. They not only have other relic hunters who will do anything to get their hands on the box but the location where the box is, is booby trapped up the wazoo. I liked the suspense aspect of the story since I grew up watching Indiana Jones with my parents. I also liked the paranormal parts as well. You see, Kendall is kind of psychic. She sometimes gets feelings or glimpses from objects or places. There's also the mystery behind her boss, Nathan. He's very secretive in the story and at one part he is seen with glowing eyes. But what I'm more interested in was Kendall's childhood friend, Adam. He died when she was twelve and there is a lot of talk about him. There is one part where one of Nathan's employee's is injured and when Kendall is trying to soothe him while help comes, he tells her not to worry that Adam is coming.
My one problem was Kendall though. I understand that she's a relic hunter and therefore used to working on her own and taking care of business herself. However, she bullets are flying and people are clearly after them, she does stupid things to put herself in harms way. Jake is there for a reason, to protect her, but for some reason when he tells her to stay put, she does the opposite. Which usually ends in Jake coming in at the nick of time to save her hide. I sort of felt like she should've realized the danger that they were in and been more cautious.
This definitely is a very interesting series. Anita took something that most people don't even think about and turned it into a unique story. I can't wait to see what Nathan is and what exactly is going on with Adam.
