Reyes is a man possessed. Bound by the demon of pain, he is forbidden to know pleasure. Yet he craves a mortal woman, Danika Ford, more than breath and will do anything to claim her--even defy the gods.Danika is on the run. For months she's eluded the Lords of the Underworld, immortal warriors who won't rest until she and her family have been destroyed. But her dreams are haunted by Reyes, the warrior whose searing touch she can't forget. Yet a future together could mean death to all they both hold dear....
My thoughts...
We have been reading about Danika and Reyes since the first book and I am so happy to see their story come to life. Danika was kidnapped back in The Darkest Night with her sister, mother and grandmother. One of the Lords, Aeron (wrath), was ordered to kill them and went into a blood lust state the longer he put it off. They were later released and told to run and hide to save their lives. In this book, we catch up with Danika who is barely getting by with the crappy waitress job she has. When she bumps into a pair of hunters, who kidnap her and try to force her to join their side, Reyes swoops in and takes her back to the fortress.
Danika is a very strong willed character. She has been recaptured by the Lords but refuses to cower to them. She starts to soften towards Reyes the longer she is in his company. He is always fussing over her and making sure that she is comfortable. Even though the other Lords are not pleased that she has returned and they are certain that she is in cahoots with the hunters, Reyes is fiercely protective of her and won't let any of them near enough to harm her. After a while, she starts to see the Lords not by the demons that they harness but for the men that they are.
Reyes takes comfort in pain... LOTS of pain. So you can guess what his demon is... PAIN. The book starts out with him getting ready to throw himself off of the roof of the fortress just to shut the demon up. You don't know this at first but he is really embarrassed at the fact that he takes pleasure in immense pain. The Lords have bought red couches since the blood doesn't stand out so much on them. And when Danika catches him mutilating himself with a knife he is ashamed of himself and tried to quickly clean up the mess. He was totally not what I expected of the keeper of Pain.
This was a great addition to the storyline. I cannot wait to read more about the Lords. I liked Reyes and Danika's story but I just didn't fall in love with them like I did with Lucien and Anya. However, I still found the story entertaining.
Favorite quote...
"Yep, that's me. I know. I know. You're humbled I'm here, feel like throwing rose petals at my feet, blah, blah, blah. No need, though. Just try and think of me as a normal guy." -William

I've read this series off and on, and I think the books are usually hit or miss for me. I wasn't a big fan of this one, but like you, I loved the one with Lucien and Anya!
